Been here since last Sunday and will be here till the 12th. Looking for any local culinary adventures off the beaten path. Have not made it to the strip yet but might go this weekend.

Really would like to find good local haunts to eat at...

Frank,

Darn it, some magazine just had a feature on good food off the Strip. But I can't remember which one, and Google knows nothing.

Here's a blog:

For my part, the last time I was there we went to Batali's restaurant. The food was very good, and the wine list extremely Italian, but the prices! $$$$$$.

Have you been to Battistas Hole in the Wall on the block behind the Flamingo Hilton? I haven't been in many years, but it used to be quite good.

Todd's a regular LV visitor. Not sure whether he's more of a strip or off-strip kind of eater, but I'm sure he'll wander by here eventually...

Frank: Think you'll have time to scout the community college/culinary school scene? Some folks were talking about a LV meet-up...

Frank,
Having been to LV over 30 times, I can tell you there are some good eating adventures in LV. The LasVegas Advisor lists the best deals. If you send me your e-mail address, I will send you a PDF file of the latest issue.
If you go to the Ellis Island Casino behind Bally's, you can get a 10oz filet cut sirloin with salad, potato, vegetable and a beer for $6.95. The beer includes their Micro Brews. This is a very good deal and I have never had a bad steak. It is always great. Just had it last January. Ellis Island also has soom good BBQ and you have to try their homemade eggnog only available this time of year.
There is also a good Prime Rib deal at the Southpoint Casino (one of my favorite casinos) for $12.95.
Make sure you go to the Golden Gate for a 99 cent Shrimp Cocktail. You have to join the slot club and put one point on your card, but the last time I was there they didn't even check. Beers are only $1.00 at the Casino Royale.
If you get a chance, try the Peppermill Restaurant. It is a very nostalgic restaurant and the food is very good.
Slots of fun has a 1/2 lb hot dog and beer special. It's too bad I didn't know you were going, or else I would have sent you the rest of my LVA coupons. I could have saved you a lot of money.
I am not a big fan of the more expensive buffets, but the three top ones are Wynn, Bellagio and Planet Hollywood. The Wynn has King Crab Legs. They are cold, but you can have them heated on the grill.
The Chicago Brewing Company at the 4 Queens downtown has an excellent IPA. Their pizza is also very good. This is a thin crust pizza if you like it that way.
Make sure you check out the Conservatorie at the Bellagio. This time of year is one of their best displays.

And just in case you get a hankering for great Japanese food (don't even bother with the Sushi), Nobu in the Hard Rock is fabulous (the black cod is to die for). It is definitely a splurge, but well worth it.

Pete...I might...I will be here till the 12th, if I can get my work here done in time to have some spare time I would be glad to go by & talk with them.

If not, I will be back in Feb for at least three months working on a new radar facility here. Would be great if the meetup were in that window.

Do you have a particular school in mind?

Nah, just thinking about the obligatory cooking session if folks ever did a CI-style weekend in LV.
