Wino,

I just heard about this because of watching Hot Thai Kitchen:

Did you go? How was it?

Fortunately, I’ve never been there – my wife and I try to avoid crowds and 500,000 is a crowd!

I lived there twice – ’72-’74 earning an MA and ’80-’82 running a 7 store clothing business – just prior to the Great recession. Both times were very enjoyable, food-wise, but going broke was no fun... :o :?

Edmonton has a huge Ukrainian and Chinese background but now, like most large Canadian cities, is extremely multi-cultural. My introduction to Ukrainian food was delightful and filling!! I grew up with a Chinese family so my background there was deep but everywhere is a little different.

Edmonton loves to party, has a large young crowd due to the University and other learning centers, some major sports teams and a diverse economy – though petroleum is a big one.
I would encourage anyone to try it but we won’t be there. ;)

We do something similar here called Folklorama, only we have pavilions scattered all over the city and it runs for 2 weeks. Each pavilion puts on some type of traditional entertainment - so traditional folk dancing and music which can range from Calypso steel drum music to Ukrainian dancing to kumi-daiko (traditional Japanese drumming) depending on the pavilion, and each pavilion offers a traditional dinner representative of their culture. I went the first couple of years that I lived here, but I personally avoid it for the same reason that Wino avoids the Edmonton festival - the crowds. It can get a bit overwhelming.

Wino,

That attendee count is a bit stunning, considering that the whole city is only 1 million people.

I believe it is a total counted over the whole time (10 days). ;)

Wino,

Still pretty impressive. People must come from all over.
