Seafood, I know, but anything that stands out?

Looking at some of the restaurant/bar menus near the hotel I have the image of lots of frozen shrimp and calamari being offloaded from the Sysco truck, so the objective is fresh seafood. The Pilot House is making promises that I hope it can keep...

Probably going to Key West the afternoon/evening of the day before we fly home, so anything off the beaten path there (or even a quintessential KW place that stands out) would be nice also.

Key Largo is my favorite place in the world and I can drown you with recommendations for that and Key West, but here are just a few:

Key Largo / Taveriner:
• Eat at Island Grill in Tavernier for tuna nachos and fried hogfish. My favorite place to eat in the Keys! Islamorada, Florida Keys, 85501 Overseas Highway (MM 85) http://www.keysislandgrill.com Ocean side (no sunset)
• Great local seafood at Snappers. 139 Seaside Ave, Key Largo, FL 33037 http://www.snapperskeylargo.com Ocean side
• If you need a huge breakfast or lunch to hold you over on your long travel day on the way back, stop at Chad’s Deli and Bakery in Tavernier for breakfast or lunch. A small diner that serves really big (and good) food. 92330 Overseas Hwy, Tavernier, FL 33070 http://www.chadsdeli.com/. There is a small resort right behind Chad’s where we got married.
• In Key Largo, Mrs Mac's Kitchen has incredible breakfast and great lunches with lots of local seafood. 99336 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo, FL 33037 http://www.mrsmacskitchen.com
• Pilot House is very good as well. The glass bottomed bar is a lot of fun. Ocean Side
• For drinks and a great sunset, stop at the Loreli, the sunsets are spectacular. 96 Madeira Rd, Islamorada, FL 33036 http://www.loreleicabanabar.com Bayside

Key West:
• Eat breakfast at Blue Heaven. Good food, very Key’s atmosphere (chickens!). 729 Thomas St. Key West, Florida 33040 http://www.blueheavenkw.com
• Don’t eat/drink in any bar with a celebrity in the name (Jimmy Buffet, Hemmingway’s). There are some great local bars you can try: Conch Republic, Green Parrot (a bit of a dive), many others. Pro tip – don’t eat on Duval street. ;)
Café Sole has a great food if you feel like splurging: 1029 Southard St Key West, FL 33040 (305) 294-0230 http://www.cafesole.com. Louie’s Backyard is also a nice, slightly upperscale place. It will require a car or cab ride. 700 Waddell Ave, Key West, FL 33040 (305) 294-1061 http://www.louiesbackyard.com

Also:
• Stop at Robert is Here for a tropical fruit smoothie or milkshake out of fruits not available in commercial markets like soupsop and canastel. This is a must-do and only 10 mins off of the highway. :) 19200 SW 344th St, Homestead, FL 33034 http://www.robertishere.com

If you have any other questions, please ask! We head down several times a year.

Lisa,

Oh, great! We hope to go to Key West too next year if it's not underwater.

If you are going to be in Key West longer than a day I will give more stops. ;) Lots of good bars, and several more restaurants worth checking out.

Great suggestions; thanks, Lisa!

The story behind Robert is Here is really interesting. I think we'll make a detour there on our way down.

Hey, Lisa!

One of our group is looking for lobster (warm water, I assume) in/around Key Largo. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Pete

EDIT: Never mind, looks like Snappers has lobster and we're probably going there.

Snappers does have local lobster tail, quite nice. You rarely get the whole lobster in the keys since there are no claws. ;)

Have a great time! Don't forget the sunblock, a hat and an umbrella. It is full on UV10+ summer here.

Post subject:  Re: Key Largo - eats?

I was going to go back and edit my original post and add a couple more items to Key West in case Fuzzy makes it down, but I can't edit something that old, so here are a few more:

Key West:
• On Duval for lunch? Try Only Wood, a wood fired pizza place. Best food I have found on Duval. 613-1/2 Duval St, Key West, FL 33040 http://www.onlywoodkw.com
• A couple of other "locals" bars to consider: Smokin' Tuna Saloon and Schooner Wharf Bar (complete dive).
• Need a late night indulgence? Better Than Sex dessert restaurant is worth a visit. You will need reservations, and you will spend more money than you thought possible on dessert and drinks. We had two desserts and he had a chocolate covered stout and I had a chocolate covered port (to clarify, the glasses are chocolate covered.). Very indulgent. 926 Simonton St, Key West, FL 33040 (305) 296-8102 http://betterthansexkeywest.com/
