Officially known as the "BBQ Capital of Texas" Lockhart was too good to pass up when we were visiting Austin at just over 30 mins away. We packed a small cooler with ice and a box of ziplocks and headed down for the day. We ordered brisket and whatever the house specialty was in each place, eating only a small bit of each and packing the rest up.

We started at Kreuz Market which was humongous. I mean it was a warehouse - it must seat 1000 people. We had brisket, jalapeno-cheddar sausage and a bit of prime rib. Kruez doesn't serve BBQ sauce so all the flavor comes from the smoke. Everything was moist and chewy. The brisket was incredible.

Next we went to Black's. It was much, much smaller, seating maybe 100. Black's sells their sauce, so it is a point of pride. We got brisket, a beef rib the size of a dinosaur leg and garlic sausage. The meat was much more heavily smoked, had great bark but the brisket was a little dry. The sausage was crumbly (but was great later cold). The beef rib was the best thing I had all day and I am determined to learn to make it myself.

At this point we went geocaching for 4 hours to try to work off some of the food...

Finally, on the way out of town we hit Smitty's. We ordered brisket and pork ribs. Both were serviceable, but neither was incredible. It could have something to do with our level of fullness as well. I'd go back and try it when we weren't stuffed if I had the chance.

Frank,

I don't supposed you have any thoughts on smoking beef ribs before I go over to smokingmeatforums?

I'm from Florida, so heat is no problem. I needed my travel humidifier though. :)

Thanks,

Actually...no...I have only smoked beef ribs once in my life. I much prefer pork ribs.

I will let you know how it turns around when I get to it. Won't be this weekend with TD Chantal dumping rain on us!
