All,

I'm about to leave for Canberra & Melbourne for 2 weeks. Any recommendations for foodie things to see/do/eat?

I could help with Western Austrailia (Perth) but not Melbourne.

I really like Australia...I'm envious!

My nephew's wife is from Melbourne (via Hong Kong). I've sent her a message, but they are moving cross country from CA to NC. It may take a day for response, but I'm sure she will offer suggestions.

Here's what I got back:

A friend of mine is headed to Melbourne & Canberra for 2 weeks. He's asked for "foodie" suggestions. Do you have any recommendations I can pass along?

He is looking for both places to eat and food-oriented things to do, like great markets, fishermans' wharfs, etc. Things I would like to do.

Melbourne, yes. Canberra, no. Melbourne has great alleyways in the city area. In the area bordered by Swanston and Elizabeth st, Bourke St to Market St has all manner of interesting laneway cafes and bars. Fitzroy (suburb) along Brunswick and Smith St, has an interesting range of pubs and bars. St Kilda on Acland St also has some good restaurants, bars and cafes. Lygon St in Carlton is great for Italian and Swan St in Richmond is Vietnamese food. The best market is the Queen Victoria Market just north of the city. All of these places are easily accessible by foot or public transport.

I hope this isn't too late. I just got this from my penpals son. He's a nurse and is leaning more towards vegetarian food:

"Shakahari vegetarian restaraunts - 201 faraday street Carlton
Vegi bar - 380 Brunswick street fitzroy
Enlightened cuisine - 113 queens bridge rd southbank
Moroccan soup bar - 183 st George's rd fitzroy north

They're the best ones that we go to - all easy to get to using public transportation or walking. The food stalls at the queen Victoria market are also worth a visit as to is the food hall at David jones department store in Bourke street. Hope this helps your friend."
