I am going on a field trip with 3 of my English students (officially voiding any income I have made off them) so we will be in London from Sun to Wed. Anyone been there recently that can give me a tip? I do want to eat at one of Ottolenghis places but other than that I have made no plans. It has been 10 years since I have been in London and am very excited. Also excited that the Swiss Franc / GBP ratio is much more in my favor than then.

Mary:
In July we ate at:

- Piccadilly Spice (Indian) on Denman Street right behind Piccadilly Circus - our favorite London Indian restaurant since 1993 (used to be called Maharaja Tandoori but they got one of those TV makeovers).
- Newman Arms (Pub, meat pies) - recommendation from Amy
- Grand Imperial Restaurant (Chinese, in a fancy setting). In the Grosvenor Hotel near Victoria Station. We felt a little underdressed, even at lunch.

That's about as exciting as we get.

Mary,

If you like beef & Guinness pie do go to the pie room at Newman Arms. Pete, you never told me you and Kathy went there!

If you have time, a stroll through covent gardens to the Neil's Yard dairy store is always fun.

When not eating we toured Sir John Soane's house and the Hunterian Museum of the Royal college of Surgeons across Lincoln Park from the Soane Museum.

Must have missed the FB post. Glad I never ordered the Shepherd's pie...not a mutton fan. I just ordered the Beef & Guinness the fist time and never ordered anything else. And, I've eaten there at least a dozen times.

Becky, it's Neal's Yard...my maiden name is Neal, and my family is from London, so I'm a little picky on the correct spelling. :D

Back home. I did not to to any of those places to eat, the women I went with were not my food obsessed friends and they just go and find a place to eat. We did ok. Had dinner in a dim sum place called Ping Pong that was alright, tapas that were ok, and McDonalds (don't ask). A surprisingly good salad at Gatwick (Asian with sticky chicken). I also got to spend some quality time with Constable Lucy and a nice lady at the Swiss Embassy after my wallet was stolen.

PS Didn't eat there, but Jamie Oliver has an interesting looking food stand at Covent Gardens

Mary, sucks about the wallet, hope you managed to salvage the rest of the trip. I hear constable Lucy is a gas when you get a few pints in her.
Did they have bacon butties on the menu at McDs? We watch Coronation Street quite regularly and that particular dish is featured a lot, along wtih cheese on toast and eggy bread. ;-)
