Me and the little woman will have an overnight stay in Amsterdam in about two weeks...should be able to slip in a good meal if anyone has a recommendation.

Find some rijsttafel (literally "Rice table") - it's Indonesian food with a Dutch twist.

A long time ago Kathy and I ate at Puri Mas located not too far from the Leidseplein & the American Hotel.

I love Amsterdam, the Dutch do not have the greatest food though. Except the licorice and pancakes. We were there a couple years ago but nothing stands out. I have a friend living there so I will drop him a note and see what he says.

I can't believe you mentioned the licorice. I love Black Licorice and when I was there, I went into a candy store and they had all kinds of licorice and I was so excited. I wasn't so happy after I tasted some of the ones I bought. For some reason, they like to put a lot of Salt into their Black Licorice. Some of the ones I bought, I couldn't eat. I still haven't figured out why they would put that much salt into Licorice.

As for restaurants, I only ate at one restaurant in Amsterdam. It was called "Eet Cafe Mlord". I ate there two times and both time it was very good. This isn't a fancy place, jus a neighborhood family restaurant with good prices and good food. I haven't been to Amsterdam in 15 years, so it might not even be there anymore.

I love salt licorice but I realize it is not a popular flavor. The non-salted stuff is very good too.

I also remember eating Neuwe Herring from a kiosk not far from the Ann Frank house. But I'm not sure that our Frank is into fish...

K bought some licorice at a candy store in Stratford-On-Avon in October (the place with QEII's portrait in jellybeans). It was a little bit unique...

Can't do the herring myself. Shudder. I am still waiting for an answer from my Dutch friend but did remember that Jamie Oliver has a 15 restaurant there http://fifteen.pocketmenu.nl/. It is a great concept that started in the UK to employ young people and teach them the restaurant business. The reviews are mixed but I still love the idea.

For fun, I enjoyed "eating from the wall" which was going to to the automated croquette place and snacking on a huge variety of fried logs of mashed potatoes and other stuff. Don't think I ever saw the name of the joint, alas.
