In the upscale Makati district of Manila is an area known as Rockwell and the Power Plant Mall. One floor down from the ground floor is a Rustan's Supermarket full of some wonderful foods, but the rest of floor is filled with eateries. One that we enjoy is the Banana Leaf restaurant. No plates, you eat off of a banana leaf. How apropos.
The menu is SE Asia with a strong Malaysian and Indonesian influence, with a bit of Vietnam and China slipping in occasionally. We did Indonesian inspired prawn balls, Thai rice, Malaysian-Chinese mango shrimp stir fry, fantastic clams in a Singaporean sauce (okay, the wife thought it was so-so, I thought it was simply effing great), and a chicken in Thai curry sauce.
There were a half a dozen different types of ice tea and lemon grass tea and a pretty good selection of local and imported Asian beers. I doing the Thai Singha beer which was a nice change from the omnipresent San Miguel. Bottomless ice tea of a somewhat more pedestrian origin was a buck.
So discounting the upscale mall setting and the line of restaurant hawkers that is a feature of Philippine malls, the food ranged from pretty good to very good. It was a chance to make a very enjoyable culinary journey inspired by different cultures and foods while enjoying yourself in a cool and comfortable environment.

Eeek! Dead camera and only so-so quality camera on the cell phone. I have a few, but not good enough to post. The food, however, was definitely worth the photos. Pardon moi. Next time we visit, I'll try to do better.

So I know what to do with banana leaves, but what do you do with a banana flower? Seen them for sale here, but never bought one.
