Sage, One of the very best new restaurants are Salt in the Central West End. It's a gastropub with great food: http://enjoysalt.com/menu.htm Another moderate priced new restaurant is FarmHaus which is South of downtown off of I44. http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?app ... &do=active The best Italian food is at Trattoria Marcella. Stay away from St. Louis style pizza. Tim ps: I have a top ten list available if you need it. What part of the city will you be staying in?? |

St Louis? I'd be hunting St Louis style ribs. Never been there but Pappy's, Bogart's, and The Shaved Duck all get pretty good reviews. I'd find it hard to resist trying The Shaved Duck simply due to its name. |

Sage, Dub me-You are in U-city/Clayton. Here is Sauce Mag's huge list: http://www.saucemagazine.com/rcresults.php?y=2011 Clayton restaurants tend to be pretty upscale, and sometimes a little stuffy. Our two favorites are Pomme (French with a $42 Prix Fixe) http://www.saucemagazine.com/rcresults.php?y=2011 and Chez Leon (also French) http://www.chezleon.com/chez-leon-dinner-menu University City has mostly casual dining. Fitz's American grill is fun with wonderful root beer. If you want the best food on the city, go to the Soulard area south of downtown for Sidney St. Grill or Niche (molecular gastronomy, NOISE! and a lousy wine selection so bring your own). Tim ps: Salt is a short drive east and may be your best choice. |

Tim, Salt was fabulous! We ordered several things from the small plates menu, and I'd be hard pressed to choose a favorite. I didn't mention before that I was traveling to St. Louis to see my sister, who was diagnosed with brain cancer right before Christmas. This was her first night out in 3 months. She hasn't been out of the supervision of doctors & husband since the diagnosis, so I wanted to find someplace comfortable (shaved hair, stitches, unsteadiness, confusion) yet upscale to take her. From my prospective: the food was excellent! The highlights: pork & fennel meatballs in a blackberry sauce; duck confit rillettes; a single scallop presented in a sealed mason jar - when you opened it, you were enveloped with the smell of the cedar smoke and the mustard sauce. WOW! From her prospective: The service was exceptional and nobody flinched at her partially shaved head with a semicircle of staples holding it together (she decided she didn't want a hat tonight - with brain cancer you can't anticipate the thought process.) They sat us next to the fireplace, which kept her comfortably warm (I, on the other hand, was doing my post-menopausal fanning with the menu). They didn't complain when I called and said we'd be late (getting her dressed and out the door can be a challenge). It was a wonderful choice and I thank you for the suggestion. Kathy |

Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear of your sister's cancer. I've been through that kind of cancer before with someone, and it is difficult...but, especially difficult when it's a sibling. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Amy P.S. Sounds like a nice meal. Something I'd like too. I love the scallop/mason jar idea! |

Kathy, I am also sorry to hear about your sister's illness. It really speaks to the quality of the restaurant that, besides having excellent food they also have the sensitivity to make the night a special memory for you both. Mary |
