I've been to LA once and was profoundly unimpressed. I thought I would love it, too. The only other place in CA I've been is Fresno (drove there from LA, work related). I think I've seen practically all of the crappy parts of CA. I need to go back and visit some good areas next time. There are some good areas, right? :?

I was in the Ontario, CA area last week (about an hour east of LA on the 10). If LA does not cut it, and if you are near Ontario, Rancho Cucumonga has a lot of nice places. Also, Market Broiler at Ontario Mills is a great find for seafood. I tried to get my wife to move out there a few years ago, but was not very successful. Before I got on my flight on Friday, I was in Simi Valley (detour - non work related) and had dinner at a Greek place. 45 min from LA on the 405.

Frank,

LA is quite large; are you going to be around Burbank, or somewhere else?

Near Burbank, a few recommendations:

  • Outtake Cafe (Ventura & Laurel Canyon)
  • Sompun Thai (if it's still there)
  • Chez Nous on Riverside

Also, the original Bob's Big Boy is in Burbank, on Riverside. The food is what you'd expect, but the architecture is special and once a month they do a classic car show at the drive in.

L.A. has a lot of terrific food, particularly Latin, Asian and middle eastern. However, the good places are far apart and not recognizable at a glance; you have to go off recommendations. The beat-up Philipino place in the half-empty strip mall is as likely -- or more likely -- to be interesting and delicious as the weekly hot spot written up in the LA Times.

Yelp.com is pretty good for recommendations on cheap, ethnic food in LA.

Having just spent the weekend in Calistoga, I'd say yes.

Josh,

I will stay in Burbank near the Burbank (Bob Hope) airport one night and near LAX the second night.
