Andy and I are going to Austin for a wedding late this month. We'll have a couple of days to discover Austin before the entire family shows up. Restaurant suggestions?

Amy,

Feh, it's been a while. There's the pub where you can watch the bats fly out. I'm trying to remember the name of the top mexican place ...

Looks good Frank! I'll definitely give it a go! Any chance you'll be in that neck of the woods around the end of the month?

Possible... I will be in Maryland next week, tentatively I am going to be in Lake Charles the last week of the month but not yet confirmed.

I think the BBQ joint is lunch only.

I'm always impressed when Frank's brain kicks in :o

This place, franklinbarbecue.com, sells out when the food is gone so be there at least 30 minutes before they open. We are going back Oct. 26-29 and this is on the list. Another place that was impressive is Perla's Seafood & Oyster Bar. Again, check the usual sites for reviews. Both places are casual (they let us in...). Franklin used to be all outdoor seating but they have moved so check the reviews.

Gonna do the Maui thing from Sept. 15-30 (including 4 days in Hana) and have some good leads but suggestions are (about food) are welcome.

Although I was raised in Los Angeles and trained on their freeways, I find Austin roads and drivers, uh, 'interesting'. Allow a little extra time... :?

P.S. I left that whole sticky, chocolaty thingy with Marilyn alone for good reason but even that I can't print :!:  8-)

Were you by chance one of my teachers?

Start a Maui thread, Lu will kick in for sure, she lives there, go up Haleakala and see the telescope I put up there, pick a silver sword as a souvenir for your wife, there’s a few rock piles up there I'm sure nobody will notice if you scatter them. Take a sack of rocks home for "good luck.' Lu will fill you in on the details I'm sure... Stop by and say hi to Mr Limburgh on your way to Hana...the lil' church visit will surely do you no harm...

As for food, expect to eat a lot of pupu's haole

I lived in Hawaii for four years...you do NOT want to go where I went... 8-) I was much younger then... ;)

Feh, I don't think my favorite Austin Mexican restuarant is around anymore. It *has* been 6 years.

These two seem to get a lot of fans:

Manuel's: http://www.manuels.com

Fonda San Miguel: http://www.fondasanmiguel.com

Or, you can always go to The Iguana Grill

I love Austin! I had a fantastic meal at Bess Bistro last year. It is the one owned by Sandra Bullock. We went in at lunchtime with two babies under the age of one. They handled it great. They put us in a private alcove that even had a privacy curtain. I assume it is the table Sandra gets when she is in town. Anyway.... the meal (even dessert) was absolutely wonderful, I am dying to get back.
