Post subject:  Thailand or Vietnam?

I've got a gazillion frequent flier miles, and Andy and I are itching to take a "real" vacation next off-season, so we're thinking about Asia. We've been to Bali before, and loved it, so want something either in Thailand or Vietnam. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've got a old friend who lives in Bangkok, and I've sent him an email, but would also like anyone's experience from this motley crew. We are in search of beaches, great food and interesting culture.

I have an actor friend who has spent considerable time in both and he raves about Thailand. Beautiful surroundings, food, he just loved it. He enjoyed Vietnam but didn't go on about it. That's all I have to go by and yes, I do trust his instincts.

I have been to Thailand and enjoyed it...never been to Vietnam. I suspect that Thailand may be a bit more prepared for Westerners.

Amy,

I don't know anything about visiting Vietnam, I'm afraid. If you do got to Thailand, get out of Bangkok, and visit some more authetic places, like Cheng Mai. I can also, obviously, strongly recommend Tokyo.

And if you want to make an overnight stop in SF on your way there/back, we'd be happy to see you.

If you go to Bangkok let me know I have a friend who has lived there off and on for years. He may have some good restaurant recomendations as well as places to see or stay.

My former boss's daughter taught for 2 years in Cheng Mai. I'm sure I can get some recommendations on places to visit and to eat (my boss is a foodie).
