I don't have specific recommendations on Chinese restaurants, except to avoid Grant Street and "Chinatown". Actual Chinese people eat in the Richmond and Sunset districts.

Oh, you'll also want some brunch & lunch places:

Brunch
Ella's (weekdays only)
Boulange Bakery (any location)
Pork Store (for really calorie-loading)
Kate's Breakfast (may have gone downhill somewhat)
Brenda's (on Polk)

Sears Fine Foods is an fun experience for the little pancakes, once. Don't order anything but pancakes, and it's definitely not worth waiting in line for an hour.

Note: good brunch places in San Francisco generally develop extensive lines by 10am on weekends. If you don't want to wait in line, arrive well before 10.

Lunch
Most of the places above under Brunch
The Ferry Building, including:
- Boccolone
- The Milk Bar
- Ferry Plaza Seafoods
- Imperial Tea Court
Taquerias all over the city, especially:
- Taqueria Cancun
- El Farolito (for meat)
- Tlaloc
- Papalote

- Crepes on Cole/on Hayes
- Crepes-a-go-go (truck)
- Squat & Gobble
Dim-sum to go from Golden Gate Bakery (on Grant Street)

My friend is taking her mom to SF in August for 5 days, they are staying in the Fisherman wharf area and will be on a budget...any of the above in that area or any new finds? I will send her the link to Fuzzy's blog but thought I'd ask too.

Jean,

There isn't anything worthwhile, foodwise, near the wharf. But its a pretty small city with ample buses and taxis; they could get away from the wharf. They could try going to the upper Fillmore, for example.

We enjoyed The Plant Cafe Organic not too far (I think) from FW. They could take one of the ubiquitous pedi-taxis but tell them to negotiate their rate before they climb in.

Ok, totally touristy, but I had a pretty good breakfast bowl at Boudin's at Fisherman's Wharf (scrambled eggs and bacon in a toasted sourdough bread bowl). It came with butter and jam for the parts of the bowl not touching the eggs (you get the top that they've cut off and the inside pieces that they have hollowed out, all toasted) and coffee. I think it was $9.
