Generally (and, this is already a gross exaggeration) I find that people who have great versions of their ancestral food at home are pretty critical of others' attempts when they dine out.

Personally, I'd go a different direction.

Well said, you won't believe what folks try to label as "chili" ;) Or "Mexican" for that matter...

Any update on this thread? I'm going to be southwest of the city and perhaps in the city visiting my sister. She should have a pretty good handle on casual dining but I enjoy the opinions expressed here too!

If by Southwest you mean the Shakopee area, I don't know of much down there. If you are going to the city it would help if you had particular cuisines and/or price levels.

Reviewing the thread, there is good Mexican in the city. I recently discovered a neat Mexican lunch place tucked away in the Northstar building. Just ate there yesterday AAMOF. I had their pollo mole and the mole sauce was damn good. Cons are that it's a very limited menu and they use storebought corn tortillas.

A fancy new(ish) Mexican place is Rosa Mexicano on Hennepin and 6th. Tableside guac, interesting interpretations of classic Mexican items. It's good but quite expensive.

Then there is the Barrio, about which I've heard good things, but in which I've never eaten.

Ivy, let me know what you are interested in and where you will be staying and I'll give you a few options.

Had the pleasure of eating a Juicy Lucy at Matt's with Darcie today for lunch. What a treat that was!

Indeed! It's always great to see Frank, and when it also involves molten cheese inside two all-beef patties, it's even better!

Here's a few of my favorites. I second the 112 Eatery - it's great. Also in Minneapolis Bar La Grassa, Anchor Fish & Chips, Origami, Black Sheep Pizza, Campiello (Eden Prairie suburb). In St. Paul The Meritage, Pazzaluna, El Burrito Mercado (good Mexican iffy neighborhood go in the daytime). Sorry, I can't think of anything in Fridley area. Have fun

Edited to add a couple more ... Northeast Social (this is pretty close to Fridley in NE Mpls), and the Strip Club in St. Paul.

Shame on me. I completely forgot you were from that area Trink. Hows sis, haven't heard from her in a while. Still use the measuring cup she gave me in San Antonio often and remember her.
