Looks like it's about 80 miles South of Pittsburg, any recomendations.

Not sure if you are coming from Pittsburgh or DC. If you are coming from Pittsburgh, you’ll probably go through Morgantown, WV and across I-68. I used to travel this route several times a year to get from Charleston to DC. I-68 has decent scenery, more so if you have the time to take the National Scenic Highway (U.S. 40).

The food scene in western MD is a little better than you’d expect for such a rural area. That’s because there are some resorts that cater to DC folks who want a quick getaway spot.

In Grantsville there are some OK options, Penn Alps and Casselman Inn. Both have better ambience than food. The Casselman Inn allegedly has a good bakery; I’ve never tried it.

Better options are a short drive away:

Mountain State Brewing Co., 6690 Sang Run Road, MD 21541
(20 miles SW from Grantsville; bonus is you get to drive on U.S. 219, a scenic road)
This is a WV-based brew put that now has 3 locations. I have eaten (and drank) at their Thomas, WV location on several occasions and it was always good. It looks like this location serves flatbreads baked in their own wood-fired oven.

Warner's German Restaurant, 14514 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, MD 21502 (no website)
This one is about 24 miles east of Grantsville.
Several of my friends liked this place "back in the day." It was closed for a few years but recently reopened under new management. It seems to be getting good reviews.

The locals rave about this Italian joint in Cumberland, about 30 minutes away. I’ve never been there.
Ristorante Ottaviani, 25 N Centre St, Cumberland, MD 21502

If you end up eating in Morgantown on the way to or from, there are a few good options. Northern West Virginia was settled by Italian immigrants who worked in the mines., so there are some good Italian-American places. Oliverio’s is one of those. So is Muriale's, but it's a little out of your way.

For fancier fare, there is the Richwood Grill or Sargasso.

Whew, now I’m hungry!

Check out "When Pigs Fly Restaurant" in Cumberland. I can't speak from personal experience but I recall hearing some good reviews recently.

Thanks, Darcie & Gerard, :P

I'll probably fly into Pittsburg.

Frank-

Another friend told me that he thinks that the restaurant I mentioned above has closed.

Thought I would bump this for potential updates, my earlier trip was delayed till mid Sept. I am sooo looking forward to getting out of this heat (now over 70 cumulative 100*+ days) to anywhere cooler.

I'll probably fly in and out of Morgantown, West (by god) Virginia. Most likely I'll stay the night there also.
