Post subject:  Side/main dish idea for TY Day

All,

For the first time in 10 years, I'm going to someone's conventional Thanksgiving with turkey and lots of related foods.

My job is to bring, in addition to an appetizer, a vegetarian side dish which can also be my main dish (as well as for anyone who's not fond of turkey). I was thinking squash or sweet potato gnocchi, but so much of the dinner is starchy already. It would also be good to bring something which could be transported cooked and reheated.

Ideas?

Maybe some kind of vegetable torte? However, the idea of sweet potato gnocchi sounds scrumptious.

A mushroom stew would also be nice and then you have something to go on top of the mash.

Mushroom stew sounds awesome.

How about an onion tart. http://www.bonappetit.com/recipes/1994/ ... onion_tart

Laurie,

Yeah, I thought of a tart (I just tested a recipe for a Greek squash, walnut & cheese galette), but we're having 5 different pies for dessert.

Mushrooms are tempting; I'll have to see how much my sweetie (who hates mushrooms) wants an alternative to turkey.

Julia Child's Gateau of Crepes is wonderful. It's in JC & More Company.
Crepes are used to line a mold. Carrots, mushrooms and broccoli are layered in the mold and each veg is separated with grated swiss cheese, a custard filling, and a crepe It's very good and makes a nice presentation. Can be topped with a tomato sauce. The carrots are julienned, the mushrooms are a duxelles, and the broccoli is chopped and tossed in butter. Crepes and veg can be made in advance. Can be served hot, room temp, or cold. Cut in wedges like a cake to serve.

I was thinking some kind of hearty legume soup or stew, although that would require extra bowls, and I don't know if your host would want to have another plate on the table for everyone.

I was just thinking about you and your t-giving Josh. I have a recipe for a gratin that has pumpkin and sweet potato and pumpkin seeds (bacon too but you could either leave it out or sub some tofu smokey thing). If you are interested let me know, it is tasty, less starchy than a tart and can stand up as a main. Also the added bonus of no mushrooms.

Mary,

Sure, I'd love to see it. For that matter, gratins in general are a good idea ... there's a whole chapter of them in Fields of Greens, as well as the Chronicle Casserole Book. I'll take a look, and compare your recipe. Thanks!

Fitzie,

I'll look through my Julia Child. That sounds like a bit much work for me though ...
