Sorry for your loss, Alina. It's always hard, even when you know it's been coming for a while.

So sorry to hear your sad news, Alina. It's of course a comfort that he lived a great long life, but that doesn't take away the sting, especially if you two were close. I know that from when I lost my father in '06 when he was almost 92. I'll be thinking of you.

Alina, My condolences. I hope that in a few years that you will be able to enjoy the holiday again. My mom passed right after Thanksgiving 12 years ago and it is still hard, but now we spend time telling stories and laughing, which helps.

Christmas Eve dinner isn't a huge deal for our family. The big meal is tomorrow. I got a couple of cornish game hens which I will split. One will be wet brined and cooked with only salt and pepper (Dad doesn't have great teeth any more and is getting pickier) and one will be dry brined with garlic, rosemary and red pepper flake for Asher and I. I plan to cook them on top of some small potatoes and call it a day.

Tonight is simple but good farm-style food at my MIL's retirement home, BUT, tomorrow will be Country Captain which I made yesterday as it is ALWAYS better 1-2 days later. There could even be some wine................. :o

Alina, I'm thinking of you too.

I woke up sick this morning, so our usual tradition of cheese/charcuterie/sparkling wine followed by a nice dinner turned into tea, juice, cold meds and Chris heating up some leftover prime rib and Duchess potatoes that I had put in the freezer after a dinner party along with some green beans. I am not looking forward to tomorrow at the in laws in this state (my SIL's children are still pre-school age and very energetic). Tomorrow will be a mix of turkey and Canadian sides with meatballs and some kind of pasta and other Italian dishes. It's always good. i just wish I was feeling better.

Well, the Provencal dinner turned out pretty well.

I'll thank Kenji for a bunch of it; I used both his 2-minute aioli, and his technique for doing brandade in the kitchenaid mixer.

Except: I cut the amount of garlic in half from Kenji's recipe, and even then I feel like I could have used less.
