Wino, expect me by 6, heading out the airport now.

Here I am packing to send my oldest away with his class for 2 days (insert sound of me hyperventilating here, 80 hormonal tweens in a city 4 hours from my watchful eye) and therefore are having an assortment of leftovers, french chicken in a pot and general panic.

I did my best but my simple meal was truly simple. Spinach salad with croutons, bison steaks with compound butter and potatoes duchesse from my grocer's freezer (one day I will make these from scratch) . Dessert is CI's chocolate mousse. Wine was from Chile, a Cabernet franc reserva called Viña Chocolán that I adore, it smells like cherries and tastes like a bit of heaven.

PS I did try to cut the butter into heart shapes but it wasn't cold enough. I probably could have carmalized something while I was messing about with that.

Edited to add: how do you carmalized a steak?

His favorite dinner, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans with shallots. We'll have a glass of wine of his choosing. Dessert is Orange marmalade bread pudding with a sprinkle of Grand Marnier. Not very romantic but it suits us.

My other half wants fried chicken. I want lobster. I think we're going to have rib eye - or maybe pork chops.

Girl Scout cookies for dessert.

I think I'll join Jean at Wino's.

I thawed two local rib eye steaks from a mixed breed steer named Fenner, so I am trying to make a meal that is as local as possible. Except for the lettuce for the salad, everything is at least regional.

Mixed Green Salad
Smoked Gouda from a nearby organic dairy.
Rib Eyes that I am planning to reverse sear and finish with some Chipotle-Lime Butter.
Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Roasted Russet Potatoes
2007 Cabernet Franc, Estate Bottled on east side of Crooked Lake by McGregor Vineyard.
Orange-Chocolate Macarons for dessert.

We have a tradition of going out the day after, when restaurants are empty and prices back to normal. So tonight is a simple, quick mid-week meal and tomorrow we shall dine at our new local NYC fav, Legend.

Chocolate mousse is not something I am crazy about but my husband and daughter are big fans. If it were up to me, I would have more steak for dessert! I did eat the mousse though...

Geekboy's working late. Thought I might bake a couple batches of biscotti, though.
