Here in the USA there's a whole niche for this kind of thing. Homemade hostess cupcakes with real chocolate cake, whip cream filling and dark chocolate ganache. Grilled cheese sandwiches made with brioche and high-end cheese. Spaghetti and meatballs from scratch with handmade pasta. I even ran across a recipe for twinkies made with pound cake and pastry cream.

However ... I have to wonder how well this is going to go over in Switzerland? Junk food is generally fairly culturally specific. I'm pretty sure that, for example, peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches are pretty much an American thing.

Probably it wouldn't go down BUT I have a pretty select audience. My cooking club is mostly American and those who are not either have lived or travelled in the States. They are going to get the joke for sure.

Jean, those mudslides look wicked.

Mary,
Maybe you can find some inspiration here -- 5 Absurdly Expensive Pieces of Junk Food.

How about pretzel wrapped high end hot dogs? Or is that still too "low?" I love the peanut butter cup idea. What's not to like?
BTW, Bellagio was beautiful and I ate so much on our trip that I am toddling around :-)

I may be able to find some odd kind of sausage. I want something small so I can have the scallop slider and a little hot dog on the same plate. Or maybe a mini chicken kiev nugget?
Glad you had fun and found something to eat!

Junque food night went very well. Started off with popcorn with butter and truffle salt and champagne. First course was mixed salad with an Asian dressing topped by little puff pastry pizza things with mozzarella, basil, raw tuna, ginger (from Around My French Table... can't seem to have guests without that book anymore). Seriously good. Main was the scallop sliders with a lime-cilantro mayo, Asian broccoli salad and some pumpkin seed oil chips and Chinese and Thai beer. Good but I think I like scallops too much to chop them up and mix them with other stuff. Dessert was peanut butter mousse in chocolate cups. The chocolate cups were a major PITA. Some people loved it and some thought it was a bit rich. I was on the too rich side but they looked cute. I decorated the plate with mini m & m's and gummy bears.

I used newspaper for place mats and put some flowers in a tomato tin. Forgot to take photos which is too bad because it was a very cute meal.

Sounds great Mary! I too wish you'd taken pics...

Chocolate is one of those things that just takes practice until you don't look like Willy Wonka when you're done with the prep.
