I love Penzey's-- I'm so lucky that the Boston Penzeys is only 10 minutes from house. And here's a thought. One year for Christmas my daughter took all the misc. spices and herbs I had, bought 40 empty jars from Penzey's (the little squat ones since they stack so well) and typed up labels for each (blank labels come with the jars). Then we went to Penzey's and bought the larger-sized plastic packages (not the bottles) of everything we wanted and with a friend we split them three ways. This would work well for shipping, too. The packages are much lighter to ship and cheaper than buying the bottles each time. All it takes is one or two people who like to cook to share and you're guaranteed much fresher spices at a reasonable rate. And I leave the jars out since they look so nice. Also guarantees against running out since you can see them so easily. It was pricy the first time, but I really wanted to start out with fresh herbs so I can keep track of them. Now we just check in with each occasionally to see if we should buy something and make an annual trip around Thanksgiving.

Janet,

Next time you want to circle the Bay, the best Arabic grocery store in the Bay Area is just off El Camino Real in San Mateo. It's conveniently right down the street from an excellent Southern food restaurant.

Thanks Josh, I will have to check the restaurant out next time I traipse up to Penzey's. Circumnavigating the Bay is not something I want to do very often. San Mateo & Back is not bad at all.

All,

Two spice mixes from Penzey's:

Sandwich Sprinkle is a great mix, which I buy and use for croutons and other things.

Chili 9000, one of their new banner chili mixes, is muddy and impotent. I put a full 1 oz into a batch of beans, and still had to add other stuff.

All,

One warning about Penzey's Turmeric: it's very, very good, but it also stains like nothing else in your kitchen. At this point, I have yellow sponges, spoons, and tupperware.

Glad this topic is here. I will be going to Cleveland this spring to visit my brother and almost as excited to visit Penzey's as him. I love the Fox Point seasoning and was wondering what else you would recommend as a seasoning for vegetables? I also like the taco seasoning, it is handy for lots of things. I was going to use it today for my fajitas but then remembered my neighbor borrowed it. I am the go to girl for spices of all sorts :D .

Mary, go get it back! It's a good neighbor that loans out her Penzy spices! I'm not sure I'm that good of neighbor.

It is back. I don't mind loaning my stuff, who knows what I am going to need. Little Karmic bank account.

Fuzzy,

I still have an old Rubbermaid spoon that's been yellow since I made my first Indian dish over 10 years ago. I guess Frontier turmeric is just as bad (good) as Penzey's since that was what I was using then.

You really should nuke in glass, y'know.
