Has anyone tried the Trader Joe's South African Smoked Seasoning. The base is not smoked peppercorns but paprika peppers which have been slow smoked for 48 hours over acacia wood and flaked, The flaked paprika is blended with sea salt (30%), garlic (17%), dried basil (6.5% and packaged in a grinder. The result is wonderful on almost anything.

$2.30 for 1.76 ounces. http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flye ... le_id=1223

Thanks Tim. I love paprika (use smoked paprika almost as much as garlic and cumin) and don't care much for black pepper. I'm always looking for tasty alternatives. This one sounds perfect for us. On the list for our next TJ trip.

I was just reading some stuff about TJ's that I didn't know. I remember the first time I went in one and was very underwhelmed. They grow on you. Deb

How funny! I had the very same reaction my first time. I thought it was a bit 'geeky'. Then I discovered the wine section.

And I had the opposite reaction on my very first visit to a Costco. Holy cow! I was pretty overwhelmed.

Tim,

My South African husband likes it and we use it for BBQ and smoking but is at pains to tell me it isn't really a South African flavor profile. It is great on pulled chicken.

I won't have a kitchen until early September and so TJ's salads and wraps, yogurts, etc have been my saving grace. I will be losing the fridge soon, so I'll have to figure something else out (although I am lucky to have a friend in the building that does not cook, so I can use her kitchen during the construction phase)

I'm taking 4 kids to NOLA by myself Saturday for a state bike race. Luckily two of them are teenagers who can help me. On the way home we are going through Baton Rouge to go to TJ's! I heard its a lot smaller than in Dallas, but I'm still excited.

Some current favorite stuff at TJ's, and pretty much always resupply:

  • Trek Mix Granola
  • Thai Spiced Almonds, and Cashews
  • Various frozen pizza-like things
  • Reduced Guild Kale & Spinach Dip
  • Frozen "Maryland-style" crab cakes
  • It's Not Santini olive oil
  • Various grain salads, such as Nutty Grain Salad
  • Roasted & Peeled Baby Beets
  • Butter (30% cheaper than grocery)

FWIW, I've found their dried pasta and soft drinks to be largely unimpressive. And most of the cheap wine is cheap for a reason; you have to hunt to find real bargains.
