Yaaay, spring veggies are here! Finally the long dark winter of root vegetables and rock-hard tomatoes is at an end. Well, the tomatoes still suck, but other things are now available.

So far this week I've made:

  • Leek, squash & pepper souvlaki
  • Asparagus & green garlic tart
  • Baby potato salad with spring onions

The last was made with these very young baby new potatoes, around 3/4" in diameter.

Has spring come yet near you? What have you cooked?

Nothing local yet but I have seen rhubarb and asparagus. I did fall for the rock hard strawberries but will try to resist for now.

It snowed this morning. Wet clumpy sticky snow. Several inches of it. Fresh local produce is at least a month away.
*sigh*

We got some watercress today, but that was it!

But the market lady did say they were optimistically planting corn today (they start it under plastic)!

We had 8 inches of heavy wet snow yesterday, but we have a local market called In Season that gets local produce from a farm that does some hydroponic farming....good stuff

Snowed all day yesterday but I think there is only about 6-7 inches on the ground. A lot of slush in the streets. Hopefully will melt in a day or two.

As far as fresh produce, forget about it for at least a month. Then maybe some local asparagus and spinach, a bit of lettuce here and there.

The tulips are just starting to polk through. That's it! Even Wegmans' seems limited, but the bad weather in Florida has to do with it. Can't wait for the produce stands to start up. Most everything here is organic - not always "certified" but they don't use pesticides - especially the Amish.

Weather has been desent, 50's-60's which is nice for March in Northern Michigan. Like most of you no decent produce for another month or more. We have had some nice berries in the market, but nothing local.

Enjoy your fresh produce Fuzzy, I'll have to dream of it a little longer.

I bought some rhubarb, from Holland not local. I am making a Cooking Light recipe for rhubarb pudding cake. It is in the oven now and smells pretty good.
