 Post subject: This shocked me - Balducci's is no longer...

I was surprised when I read this article about Balducci's closing in April '09. Remember this Fuzzy? It says they "priced themselves out of the market"...not surprising, considering what we saw. And it says the original, in Greenwich Village, closed in '03, which I figured, seeing the huge market we were in. Some things don't really get better when they get bigger.

Wow, Dave...I did not realize they had closed either. I remember my first visit many years ago and my jaw dropped at the prices. I just wanted a baguette, brie and some flowers and it would have cost me close to $75....needless to say, I went somewhere else.

The only time I was in NYC I went there (2000). It was pricey but I enjoyed gawking - I think I bought some insanely expensive walnut oil which I couldn't get in WV except by mail order, so the cost was reasonable. I made my friend keep driving around the block while I shopped since we couldn't find a place to park. He must have made 20 circuits LOL.

Dave,

Yeah. It was very pretty, but we didn't even consider buying anything there. It says something when a store makes Dean & Deluca look reasonably priced. And with so much competition from other gourmet markets ...

Too bad that the space won't be a food temple anymore, though. Glad we got to see it when we did.
