Kathy and I are going into NYC on Saturday (hopefully it won't be too rainy). We're planning on having dinner at No. 7 around 6:00, so we need something to fill our day so we don't end up spending the period from 4-5:30 in a bar somehere.

Can any of the part-time or full-time Manhattanites recommend some food markets or farmer's markets that we might not have found yet? We know about the carnival that is Canal Street, we've been to Zabar's and the Columbus Circle Whole Foods and that grocery store further up on the West Side whose name escapes me...

If we do something like this from mid-AM to mid-PM, then the Christmassy stuff until late afternoon, we might last the day, assuming we haven't overestimated our stamina.

What can you suggest?

Hi Pete,

What is this restaurant?????

My must do list for Manhattan includes the following:

    MOMA: 11 W. 53rd

JB Prince: The best restaurant supply store anywhere. 36 E. 31st (7th? floor) http://www.jbprince.com/

Korin Knife Store @ 57 Warren Street (bet. W Broadway & Church St.) http://korin.com/site/home.html

Murray's Cheese @ 254 Bleecker St. (between 6th & 7th Ave.) Fresh buratta cheese. http://www.murrayscheese.com/ This is a wonderful neighborhood filled with wonderful little shops like Faico's, Onommeneli's, DiPalo's, Despana and the sort. I love the Japanese wholesale fish store with huge tanks of everything.

Murray's also has a shop at the Grand Central Station Market, 43rd St. & Lexington. This market has a Penzey's and a number of nice food places.

    Jeffrey's Meat Market 120 Essex http://www.jeffreysonessex.com/

    and Broadway Panhandler, Fairway, Jefferson's,

You'll have to tell us about this restaurant experience and kiss the owner for me!

Tim

You are probably thinking of Fairway...

Grand Central Station is fun. Not food but this time of year I would nip into FAO Schwartz or the big Toys R Us for a bit of atmosphere. Oh, who am I kidding, I would be in a bar.

I will probably be in NYC around Easter, I may have to check out this place... think I could get a good table?

Pete,

I forgot to mention Moore Brothers Wine Company at 33 E. 20th St. http://moorebrothers.com/

fyi: No. 7 serves a wonderful white grenache from Reynard. Body, flavor, acidity, and reasonable.

Have fun,

Tim

Thanks. For some reason we seem only to have visited the Fairway in harlem (possibly on Warner's recommendation), even though I think we have walked down BWay from Zabar's back to Columbus Circle.

We'll take some notes from the responses and be prepared. In 24 hours Saturday's forecast has gone from 40's and 50% chance of rain to 30s and 100% rain and snow...

Sorry I wasn't around when you first posted Pete. I would have offered some suggestions too, since NYC is my home, but everyone else gave you great suggestions so it looks like my advice wasn't needed afterall ;) .

What did you end up doing?

Looks like fun Pete! Chelsea Market is our preferred place to shop for produce, seafood and a good butcher.

We're around on this Sunday. Send me an email if you have time for a drink or quick hello.
