So, I'm in Whole Paycheck today to pick up half a case of wine which my other wine mongers don't carry. Given that I'm buying six bottles for $80, you'd think they'd offer me a box. No. Instead, they offered to sell me a special 6-bottle wine bag for $5.

Apparently this is their policy; they don't give out wine boxes for free, no matter how much wine you're buying. Guys in front of me were buying 18 or 20 bottles of wine; they didn't get a box either.

Whole Paycheck, indeed! I have to find somewhere else to buy this wine.

Fuzzy,

My WholePaycheck moment came when I was looking for paprika. They only carried one kind, labeled "California organic". I asked if it was sweet or hot. Their blank stares answered my question. I explained that I was looking for Hungarian paprika and received a "lecture" on the terrible risks I assumed in purchasing any foreign paprika which probably contained dangerous substances, all unnamed.

Tell us the name of the wine and we will find you a source. That's a promise!

Tim

Tim,

It's Kris Pinot Grigio: http://kriswine.com/wines.php

We like it both because it's an excellent, moderately-priced Pinot Grigio ($13), and because it's named after my wife.

I can get it from one of my other wine sources, I just need to order a whole case, and order ahead. Hmmm ... actually, looks like BevMo carries it now, so I can get it there. They're a big evil chain too, but at least they'll give me a damn box.

Maybe they leave deposits on the wine boxes, and have to return them to get it back?

There are stores around here that encourage patrons to bring their own bags - if not, you can buy them! But then, these are places like Aldis, that are very low priced. I was surprised when I saw whole foods was not doing this!

Really, the folks at the Whole Foods in Farmington are always very sweet to me -- hauling out coupons if I buy something that happens to be in the circular, reminding me that if I get one more butter I'll get the case discount, and calling me when they have catfish that week. They even get me a cardboard tray when I buy a case of pop. I suppose they'd get me a box, but the pop comes in trays.

Here's what I don't get -- I almost never buy wine and yet I own a bottle bag. Why don't you? They are only $2 at TJ's.

I miss Whole Foods. And Central Market too.
