Amy, I don't know if you can get it in person, but they were having a free vanilla paste with order coupon.

At the corner of Dundee and Milwaukee in Wheeling there's a great multicultural grocery called Fresh Farms. I hadn't realized you were out in the North Shore.

Jesbelle, If you have one nearby, Costco now has rodelle vanilla beans. I have found them to be really decent quality.

I wish there were. I think there's one in Kalamazoo, but that might as well be the moon these days. I've been using the Rodelle extract lately and it is quite decent, especially considering the price. Bub and I will be visiting the in-laws for his birthday next week and they live across the street from Trader Joe's. I'm hoping they've got some. Apparently, they only carry them during the holidays.

JB- I was happy with my vanilla bean order from saffron.com and I think becca was too. Can't beat their pricing from what I've seen.

Amy,

Try out the French Market, just for the cheese shop, which is truly excellent. There's not much else there, unfortunately. You can swing by Greek Town and hit the greek market there on the same trip, though. That market is fairly small, but does have some specialty ingredients.
