Tim,

My grocer just expanded his meat selection, but I doubt it would cost me any less to ship than Gaspar's.

And Mexican chorizo. Not the sausage type: the kind you buy from the butcher, and you don't want to read what's in it.

Not ingredients, but I miss New York Pizza, Italian food and bagels! Ingredients I can't seem to find in No. Cal. are quick cooking grits and self rising cake flour. Granted I don't use either that often, but it sure would be nice to be able to find them.

Here's how desperate - and pathetic - my search for jalapenos almost became.

Yesterday I needed a quick lunch and where I was that was a near impossibility (lunch is a long affair here). I found a Subway and said Why not? See how it is? You hate it back home, maybe it's different here. Bread and quality is a big deal here....

Well, it's the exact same - a Subway Club is a Club. BUT! they have pickled jalapenos! I ordered beaucoup and thought, briefly, I should take them off the sandwich and bring them home and share with my wife, treasure them, and be thankful for the gift Marianne* has provided me.

Instead I was selfish and inhaled the sandwich, rolling in ecstasy with my shitty sandwich, made fantastic by a jarred commodity product available 3500 miles away.

I wanted to cry.

Hi,

Not to hijack but...

These ideas should provide a shopping list for any weekend meet-up.

In thinking back about things I've had to search all over town for or have had to order over the Internet, I'd add the following: poussin, quail (and quail eggs for that matter - although it's a once a year deal around here), and sweetbreads.

Glad to hear you finally found them, Lou!

Here's a thought, which naturally I would have, since I have always tried to grow things I could not get locally, but would it be possible for you to grow them where you are? Even in a pot indoors, maybe, using a good light source? Of course, you probably can't find seeds, either, but that's easy. I'd send you some, if you decide to tackle it, to take care of your addiction!

Thanks Dave! I'm actually thinking about it - I think the seeds would be available or I could get them (I go back to the States frequently) but it doesn't get very hot here. Still, I'll settle for anything!

Lou
I have often asked at restaurants to buy ingredients and they are usually pretty good about it. I used to get all my Mexican stuff that way and sometimes Asian stuff too. Or PM me your address and I will send you a jar of pickled jalepenos.
