I think Kathy said she was going to start restocking in January, but I start in August and September. I didn't can this year (grrrrrr) but usually, I have a pretty big larder by October.

Chicken has been sooooo cheap: 79 cents/lb. for chicken thighs; .99 for boneless skinless breasts, gotta get some at that price. And Tops has been having 10/$10 deals, and BOGO's.

Am I doing this wrong? How does everyone else hoard -- I mean stock up?

KSS,

I wouldn't know. I have an apartment-sized fridge/freezer. Which needs cleaning out.

Our idea of "stocking up" is a trip to Trader Joe's. Which we can't do either until we clean out the pantry ...

In my profession you become very accustomed to making things in volume...it's kind of how my brain is wired. So, I tend to make a lot of things that freeze well (and, I have three freezers) so when I've been cooking all day at work, I can come home and still have a great meal with minimal amounts of fuss. Like you KSS, I also buy a lot of what's on sale, and then figure it out from there. But, some of my best buys come when I shop our "best" (and I use that term loosely) market on off-hours as they tend to have a significant amount of "manager specials" in the meat department (i.e., meat that is close to the expiration date) but is perfectly good. You wouldn't believe how cheap I can get things...

I didn't use to be frugal, but I guess the recession (and working in the industry, where food cost has to managed to a minutia level) has gotten me to think differently.

Besides, my precious bell pepper hoard, I like to put up lots of frozen meals. I tend to get a mild case of S.A.D. each year, and once the holiday high is over, I crash a bit in January. Nothing serious, but my energy is pretty off for a month or so. I like to have a cache of things that can just go in the oven. I'll probably start that in November. I also like to have freezer rolls and biscuits on hand, but that's a year-round thing.

We spent a bit of time on Sunday defrosting and re-inventorying the freezer. I think we're down to one piece of lamb (aside from kidney & tongue) and a piece of hog jowl (but there's some beef and other stuff down there as well).

This year's lamb has been confirmed from the farmer and we're on the lookout for the right/left half of a pig.
