Post subject:  Loquats ready for harvesting

My son has a big loquat tree on his property that is just loaded with fruit.
Many are starting to drop to the ground.
I don't think I've seen a loquat tree before last year.
The fruit reminds me of apricots in size and color, the taste is similar too.
The tree itself is way different though.

Anyway, my granddaughter will be turning two next week and a little party is scheduled.
I'm thinking about harvesting 4 or 5 pounds of these things and making a loquat preserves (jam or chutney) and canning them in a bunch of mason jars and giving them as gifts to the guests.

There are a bunch of very simple recipes out there, and I have no doubt I can just wing it and come up with something tasty, but wondering if the board has some experience or ideas.

Rumors: the leaves and seeds may cause sickness if devoured because they contain cyanogenic glycosides; (base for cyanide) slightly poisonous especially in large quantities.

Any advice or suggestions is appreciated!
