I just ordered this. With shipping, the total was $20.00. The kit includes:
Roaring Brook Dairy Mozzarella Cheese-Making Kit, Dairy Thermometer, Gloves, Citric Acid, Rennet and Cheese Salt, Instruction Manual. The Kit will make 4lbs.

Todd,

Note that the "fast" mozzarella doesn't always work, it's kind of finicky. I suggest making one pound at a time, since your first attempt is liable to fail.

If you get into this, though, I can give you the list of equipment you need for general soft cheese making. None of it's terribly expensive.

Super to hear you are making your own. Even if you can buy it cheaper at the store, making your own lets you have insight into what it takes and can end up giving you more flavor.

I have the last of the gear coming, a PH tester for checking the stages. My cheese vat is a rice cooker controlled by a PID unit, I have the starters and rennet on hand. Mozzarella adventures will start in about six weeks, depending on ocean currents, tropical storms, and the cruising speed of the container ship.

Keep us informed of how your efforts work out, talanhart. And best of luck!

Steve,

Well, mozzarella making is kind of fun, but it's frankly not as good mozzarella as I can get even in a medium-grade market here in California. Different story in the Phillipines, of course.

Where home cheesemaking really delivers is fresh cheeses. Ricotta as good as what I can make with carton milk and 40min of effort costs $10/lbs or more as cheese, and I can't always get it. Queso fresco, gervais, and other fresh cheeses are so much better made yourself.

Josh,
Thanks for the advice.

Steve,
Good luck with cheesemaking and I hope everything arrives quickly for you.
