A friend sent this to me and I was wondering if anybody has ever tried this before.

When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted I find you can't taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge.
The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit, and voila! Raspberries will last a week or more, and I've had strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. So go forth and stock up on those pricey little gems, knowing they'll stay fresh as long as it takes you to eat them.

I had never heard of that but since strawberry season is only a month away, it is a timely tidbit of information. Thanks!

I use Rubbermaid Produce Savers, and they work great to extend the life of berries, lettuce, etc. I'd be a little weary about using vinegar on something as porous as raspberries. Let me know if you try it.

I use the hot water method... Crazy, but it works!

I first read about it here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/651851

I use it for raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. It really works.

beccaporter, much appreciate the link to the McGee Strawberry story! We are just a month away from the beginning of strawberry season here in the Philippines and Baguio City, where I live, is considered the strawberry capitol. I buy and make strawberry puree for ice cream, since I have a medical condition that limits the amount of raw strawberries I can ingest. (Drat and double drat!)

I mentioned this to other folks that enjoy the fruit and indulge; they had not heard of it either. So from all us strawberry lovers up in the mountains of Luzon, "Thank You!"

I use one of those 'containers' (not the bags) that came with my Food Saver. They work like a wonder.
