It's easy to read this as "the FDA being overcautious at the wrong time in the face of industry pressure." Which might be true. On the other hand, an FDA official also makes a telling point:

For instance, she said, "We want to have some surety that if BPA is removed from products, that what is put in its place is not a problem as well."


I do note with some bitterness though that the FDA is very cautious when banning some products with proven health issues (like BPA or Pink Slime), but at the same time is all-too-ready to ban or recall other products (like tomatoes or artisan cheese) based on a tiny number of unsubstantiated illness reports.
