All,

Apparently not even our pistachios are safe anymore: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... 716D80.DTL

The NY Times article pointed out that employees used the same transport bins, conveyors and packing equipment for raw and roasted pistachios. This apparently provided a mechanism to re-contaminate the roasted nuts (roasting would kill the salmonella).

ya know- safety is an illusion. I will take reasonable precautions in dealing with high risk foods and enjoy the rest. This could well be a case of improved testing/reporting highlighting what is a minor problem.
Not to say I'm not empathetic to the people who have had to deal with salmonella, but that the absolute numbers, compared to the amount of peanut product (for example) consumed daily in this country are minuscule. From what I can tell, there have been no reported cases of illness from pistachios, just the recall "in case".
As foods move into wider consumption and we get ever-more risk averse, requiring testing on every morsel someone might eat, this type of problem will be showing up more often.
