Does anyone know where listeria comes from? How does it enter our food supply?

"How does Listeria get into food?

"Vegetables can become contaminated from the soil or from manure used as fertilizer."

"Animals can carry the bacterium without appearing ill and can contaminate foods of animal origin such as meats and dairy products."

The bacterium has been found in a variety of raw foods, such as uncooked meats and vegetables,

as well as in processed foods that become contaminated after processing, such as soft cheeses and cold cuts at the deli counter.

Unpasteurized (raw) milk or foods made from unpasteurized milk may contain the bacterium.

Contamination may occur after cooking but before packaging.

Don't you just love our food industry?????

Quoth A Bunch Of Monkeys On The Internet:

Listeria can be found in soil, which can lead to vegetable contamination. Animals can also be carriers. Listeria has been found in uncooked meats, uncooked vegetables, fruit such as cantaloupes,[5] unpasteurized milk, foods made from unpasteurized milk, and processed foods. Pasteurization and sufficient cooking kill Listeria; however, contamination may occur after cooking and before packaging.

I remember when I was peggers, there were a bunch of warnings about lunch meat. It was high on the list of things I wasn't supposed to eat along with raw milk cheese. Listeriosis is one of those illnesses that can affect the fetus, as well as the mom.
