So a friend gave me some salmon he had smoked this summer. I've kept it refrigerated, but brought it on a trip and it inadvertently was left out of refrigeration about 24 hours. To eat or not to eat? Thanks for your help.

I don't know, cookie. 24 hours is a long time. Did you give it a sniff? If it smells OK I might chance it, but I'm sort of reckless that way.

Haven't smelled it yet, it's vac-sealed......

Where was it during it's non-refrigerated rest? Unless it was someplace very warm, I'd say go with the sniff test and taste a small amount along with a chaser of cold vodka!!

It was in a suitcase in carry-on on an airplane, then stayed in the suitcase overnight. I didn't even realize my husband had put it in there and he had wrapped it in a Pier One bag. So I thought it was something of his, and just left it there......

If its vac sealed and in a cool place, it should be ok....no air has gotten in and the smoking is a method of preserving meat and fish. Give it the smell test and like Lynn siad, have a vodka chaser just in case.

That's what my friend, the salmon-smoker said. I am serving it on Saturday. If I don't post again after that, you'll know not to do this yourself!

Okay, so the salmon looked good, smelled normal and tasted great. Everyone loved it and they are all in good health today! thanks for all the advice.
