A good friend on mine has a cabin at a private hunting lodge here in Michigan. I was there last weekend and cooked a great meal, if I do say so myself. Anyway, he called me just now and asked if I would be his cook for the weekend of the 25th of September for 6 people plus myself. I get to plan all the menus, etc. I can't wait. I will keep you updated with ideas and will probably need suggestions. I have three weeks to plan.

At least you've already used the kitchen in question. That will make it much easier to plan.

Becky,
Yes, he has a well stocked kitchen with pots and pans and most of the essential pantry items. Last weekend, I made a Banana cake and I felt bad using his Egglands Best Organic eggs at $4.99 a dozen just for baking.

Todd,

You being paid for this?

I'd strongly suggest that you get your friend to poll his guests for critical food issues, like allergies or vegetarianism.

Also, if it's a hunting lodge, is there the possibility of fresh game? What kind?

Nope, not getting paid! I'm doing it for a good friend of mine who is very generous to me when it comes to paying for dinner, movies etc. This is also the friend who has a house in Ft. Lauderdale and I am also welcome there anytime.
No allergies and no vegans. No fresh game as it isn't the hunting season yet. I haven't even started to plan yet. I do know that I am going to make the Carrot Cake ice cream that I just posted. It's sitting here on my desk at work and unless I make it before then, I will make it that weekend.

Now that is a good friend Todd! Well worth the effort.

I would suggest that one of your meals be a hearty soup or stew that you can make ahead of time. These things always taste better after a day or two plus it gives you more time to play or do something impressive like bake a fresh loaf of bread.

Keep us updating on your menu planning. I love planning menus, lets my inner control freak take over.

Todd, I agree a nice soup or stew or I have a fabulous hungarian goulash recipe I got off the CI message board. A hearty loaf of bread of course.

If you want to do something on the wild side swing thru here on your way, we have some locally raised buffalo and they sell the burger just down the street from me. I bought a package a couple weeks ago. I'm probably making burgers with it. Or go back to Ebels for some steaks or chops.

I know you will have fun doing this. Have fun!

Laurie

I like the idea of a hearty soup or stew!

Ebels has been on my mind for steaks one night.

If you make lunch a one-pot dish then people can wander in and out and get it when they want to, which is nice on a vacation. A big casserole full of mac and cheese and ham that can stay warm for a long time and still be tasty would be good. If there's not going to be game, is there a chance of fresh caught fish? Roll in corn meal and fry in bacon grease. Don't forget dessert!

Todd, I know, once you've been there it's hard not to want to go back. The deals are just to good to pass up. The Prime serloin is on sale again this week, you could have it cut into steaks or a big roast would be great.
