I heard it was just in the Boston B&J shop...I cant link to it but they had to issue an apology because people were offended by the use of fortune cookies

I asked a friend of mine (that happens to be a Secret Service Agent) that is in close contact with current as well as multiple past POTUS, his response to the protocol question regarding past Presidents was:

"I don’t speak to them that often but as I understand protocol, when you are speaking to them, you can still say Mr President. I usually go with my standby, “Sir.”"

Their job is not to be "engaging" but invisible, they do not chat or strike up conversations with them...kind of a speak when spoken to environment. :)

I'm going with his take...
