On Facebook, a bunch of us have been discussing the possibility of a CH meetup this year.

So, who would be into an ex-CI/Cookaholics/Culinary weekend in Portland OR?

I'm thinking:

  • - A couple meals at top Portland restaurants/food carts
  • - Cheesemaking class with Claudi Luchero
  • - Evening or afternoon group cooking thing in a rental kitchen

Other possibilities include, depending on what folks are into:

  • - Trip to Willamette Valley winery(ies)
  • - Oregon wine tasting class in town
  • - Class/discussion on culinary gardening
  • - Visit to the PSU Farmer's Market
  • - Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, or other cooking class if I can find a teacher
  • - Trip to the Gorge for sightseeing + fruit + cider
  • - Handmade chef knife shopping with Arnon
  • - Some kind of memorial service for Amy

If it's this year, then probably September; August is too early and likely to be Fire Season, and October can become cold and rainy. Otherwise, we'd need to look at 2020.

Portland is more affordable than the aborted San Francisco event would have been. However, it is the West Coast, so for those of you coming from the Midwest or South it may still be spendy. Take a look at hotel prices out here to get an idea of what we'd be looking at.

Please respond and let me know if you're into doing one of these, and if so what months you'd be available for.

Josh, my stepson may be moving to Portland in September (he's now near Redmond I think). Anyway, if that is the case, I know Steve would love an excuse to go up. I'm not cooking as much now (lazy) but would love to get together. The first list of suggestions sound better to me fwiw. Thanks for planning this.

Alina:

Is he coming here for college? Something else?

No, he's 38, a Navy vet, and just got married in Thailand in February. He is working in Redmond now. He is a safety inspector for plants, oil sites and factories. Next to last gig was at a Tesla plant. Each site is time limited, though I believe the Portland one is expected to last 2 years. His wife had her own business in Thailand and she is looking into maybe doing rolled ice cream? That is the last I heard. They'll be here June 1 for a couple of days so I'll know more after that.

Sounds interesting; I hope lots more people see this, especially some of the old-timers who we never see anymore.

Alina,

Ah! Well, keep me posted. And if they want advice on moving to Portland or on things here, feel free to forward their questions.

I already answered on the facebook page, but without comment. I would love the idea of the Asian cooking class you listed.

SS,

I'll do a bunch of surveys closer to the event.

Date picking!

Please help us pick a date (in 2020) for this! I'll pick the weekend the most folks are available.
