Don't mean to hijack but just had to post that we are upstate and it's -12 degrees  , and that's just the air temp on the thermometer, doesn't account for wind chill. Plus we had a horrendous 4+ hour train trip (its normally 1 1/2). Then had to dig our truck out of the lot which was plowed in with frozen snow, and crack and scrape ice off all windows, inside and out. Took another hour to do that, in these temps!
I'm soooooo looking forward to spring and the thoughts of that wonderful Philadelphia Flower Show just brightened my outlook!Nancy

It was 5 at dawn, the cats aren't even asking to go out.

Something about the time the first local produce shows up at the markets would be good.

5 below yesterday when I went out for the morning paper. A bit warmer today but blowing snow. Looked in cooking magazines for a recipe yesterday and it seemed everthing called for a cup of fresh basil. Now where in H*** would you find fresh basil in January?

Might as well throw out some dates.

Easter is April 12. The would rule out that weekend, and maybe the weekend before?
The first 3 weekends in May won't work for Kathy & me - that's France. Maybe May 16th or 17th if nothing else worked.
I know that mid-March can be blustery - we go to NYC in March sometimes and standing around can get cold.

So the possbile dates could be (feel free to add others):

March 21 or 22? Possibility of cold and/or snow this early
March 28 or 29
April 4 or 5
April 18 or 19
April 25 or 26

I don't track local produce very well but obviously later might be better for local grown stuff. The indoor shops would have their regular products no matter the season.

Dave - Are you available either Saturdays/Sundays or only Sundays?

Aw cripes. I may end up being the stick in the mud again! But I will try, I will. It's just that we have so much stuff to do on weekends in April and May and then all that stuff has to be watered, every weekend, because we want it to grow, and weekends are the only time we can tend to the stuff.

The last weekend in March is out for us.

This year I'm chair of The Lower Hudson Valley Engneering Expo which that week end is hosting 500 high school students, parents, 100 exhibitors and a bunch of Professional Engineers looking for PDHs

All,

Regrettably, 100% of my pleasure travel dollars this year are going to a trip to Rome, Pisa & Israel. So, have fun y'all.

I work Saturdays, but as long as I know well enough in advance I can get off. And I have no major plans any weekend in March or April.

BTW, like Martha, I also depend on hydroponics for my offseason basil. Just one plant of each type keeps me supplied, and I can't cut it fast enough!
