All:

One of the features offered by this board software is the ability to store pictures on the board, instead of needing to link an outside site. This would have the following benefits:

  • You wouldn't need an account with photobucket/flickr/smugmug in order to post pictures.
  • Links to people's offsite photos wouldn't break when the external hosting site dropped them or changed its URLs.
  • The BB software can automatically create thumbnails, saving those of us on slow internet connections from giant image downloads.

The reason I haven't already enabled this feature, however, is that the hosting company where this board is installed (Hub.org), while otherwise very economical, has strict storage limits with high costs for increasing storage. And pictures tend to take up a lot of disk. So, if we wanted to enable on-board storage of pictures, it might require me to solicit donations to cover the cost of expanding our disk space -- up to $100/year per gigabyte. Which seems like a lot to pay when Flickr, Google, etc. have unlimited storage space.

So, I want to survey what people actually want before we take the step of allowing on-board pictures. Please respond to the survey.

Also, the board allows the storage of other kinds of attachments, although I can't imagine what those types would be. If you reply, please comment if you'd like to be able to do other attachments, and if so, what kind.

I'm adept enough with the free photo hosting options that it works for me. Most of the other forums (fora?) I use require you to post at some off-board location and link to that from the board.

Heck, if I am still paying $30+ a year for CI, I'd gladly pay to have photo storage capability.

PDFs are sometimes useful if someone has developed a chart/illustration.

Folks,

As it turns out, there are technical issues with the image storage for phpBB which I'll have to look into before I can enable the feature. Once I figure them out, we'll have image storage available as an experiment.
