Yah, I use a US drop point (a UPS Store). Also have inlaws in an extreme pinch, plus have had stuff delivered to hotels when I visit (a few times a year). At its core, we have 1/10 the population of the US with a lot of space. We also have a post office that more or less breaks even, with no direct cash subsidies. Our population density is very significantly lower then the US/UK. Of course, the post office is also antiquated and inefficient. Yah, I signed up on the pig train! |

Use the salt to cure my pig and send the ham instead... Don't need it, keep it and save money and time |

I can barely manage to feed the cat and string a few words together to Chris by the end of the day....so I can't imagine where you find the energy for your multiple pursuits. Love the slugs! A cookaholics salt pig would be super cool. It's called "not having kids". BTW, if I'm making salt pigs as a freebie, they'll be fairly minimalist. |

I don't need a salt pig, but I appreciate the thought! Amy |

I'd love to blame Canada Post, but I think it's you guys across the border that is the problem. I can ship your direction no problem. UPS will ship right to the border for a song, but cross it by 5 feet and you add $30 and 3 weeks. USPS on the other hand clearly has some kind of agreement with Canada Post, and it tends to be the most reasonable of the options. I'm rarely even assigned duty. |

Carey, Last year we tried to ship a friend in vancouver a jar of homemade lemon curd. This has given me a very dim view of Canadian postal customs. |

I have a parcel service across the border too...I rarely use it as I need to save enough to cover the gas to drive 1 hour each way, plus duty. It also has to be worth it to suffer the nasty looks of Canada Customs officials when they realize that I have just driven across to pick up a parcel and have created more paperwork than they will recoup the cost of in duty. So essentially I only use it when I can't find somewhere to ship to Canada on something that I really want, and even then I tend to do it in the summer time. As for the salt pigs, I was assuming that we would order them, not that they would be gratis. Maybe the salt pig profit could also be put towards board related things. I also like the idea of a small open casserole sized to fit a wheel of brie...(i.e., hot dip sized). If it had handles, all the better. |
