Post subject:  How to use the Board Chat

For those of you who are new to this board, you may not have noticed that we have a simple webchat feature. Here's how to use it:

How to get to the Chat

Click the "Cooks Chat" link in the top navigation menu. You may want to open this link in a second tab or browser window so that you can leave it open while reading the rest of the Board.

How to Chat

The Chat screen has a scrolling window with the last 10 or so chat posts. Below this is a small text box. Type what you want to chat into the text box; if you keep typing a long sentence, it will expand to accommodate more text. When finished typing, press the ENTER key or click the SEND button.

The Chat checks the server every 10 seconds for new messages, so you will see other people's messages after 10 seconds and they will see yours.

What Are The Other Buttons For?

RESET clears the text box in case you change your mind about what you wanted to type. SMILIES and BBCODES allow you to format your message.

What's That Clicking Sound?

If you have your computer's sound turned on, and the "Use Sound" checkbox checked on the chat, then you will hear a clicking sound every time someone else posts something. This will allow you to have the chat open in a second browser window, and check it whenever someone else says something.

If you find the clicking sound annoying, uncheck the "Use Sound" checkbox.

Nobody is There! I'm All Alone on Chat!

You could check the bottom of the main Board index to see who else is online, and PM them and invite them to join you on chat.

Can I do a Private Chat?

No. That's not supported by the software we're using. If you need to private chat, I suggest using some kind of instant messenger.

Also, you must be logged into the board to use the chat.
