... I did stay up until 4am installing it.

Here's what you do, everytime you log into the board:

1. Right-click on "Cooks Chat" at the top menu. Choose "open in new tab" or "open in new window".

2. When you get to the chat, type "howdy" or "hi" or "cold enough for ya?" in the little text box, and hit enter, so people know you're here.

3. Leave the chat window open while you browse the rest of the Board. It will "click" at you whenever someone replies to you.

Josh,
Chat won't work on my Mac. It's not a problem with the software, it's a problem with my computer. It's 12 years old.

Fuzzy, I was using the chat, but it seemed I was the only there. Sometimes, I think we ought to have a "chat appointment," such as the "should I move the board" discussion. I have the sound notification on, but it only works if I'm in the chat room, rather than on the board. Some discussions, we should meet on chat.

I'm not sure I understand the purpose for chat. We are all one the board at different times, so the odds of stumbling across someone with whom to have a conversation is not great. And since the conversation scrolls off the screen, it's not there for others to participate when they come along later. That's one of the joys of a forum; you can participate in the conversation on your own schedule. We all get input from folks who have different schedules and different time zones. Someone can drop in a week later and offer a valuable addition to the subject. A chat room removes that possibility.

I think KSS is right. It serves a purpose for administrative or training discussions (maybe for new mods). Maybe a place to take a discussion offline. But other than talking about the weather, I'm not sure what kind conversation to have there.

If we wanted we could schedule a regular time to chat-and whoever was available could join in. Or those interested a specific subject-say sous-vide, could set up a time and have that discussion. It can be lots of fun.
