Wasn't exactly sure where to post this (so feel free to move Josh).

I've decided I want to roast my own coffee. What's the best piece of equipment to do this?

I've heard that a hot air popcorn popper is a quick start.

I've heard that too Pete. I just don't want to "outgrow" anything too quickly. I don't own an air popcorn machine, and so would have to buy one.

A good friend of mine has a nice tabletop model drum roaster. I will ask him what brand it is, because it looks nothing like the ones I found on the google.

Try a Salvation Army/Goodwill. They always seem to have some.

I went into this whole hog with a buddy, the best of everything, never could get anything close to what I prefer and can get locally despite buying the best, reading everything, and endless experimentation. I'd suggest you get somebody to take you under their wing and see if that's where you want to put a lot of your time and a lot of money. A GREAT disappointment...

I've used an iRoast2 weekly for the last few years for my espresso beans. I make pretty much exactly one batch a week, so am at probably around 200 batches by now. I actually roasted in the oven (manually) for quite a while, too.

Pros:
- Cheap-sh
- Works
- Since all the smoke is driven straight up, it is fairly easy to vent.

Cons:
- Doesn't do a lot of coffee. For "regular" coffee, it doesn't really make enough. Of course, this depends on your household coffee needs.
- In my experience, with most beans, it cannot do good medium roasts. It is too fast (even at min temperature), and there are too many under-roasted beans, sometimes giving a very off flavour. It does darker roasts well. I've had poor luck with beans that need a 'slower' roast.
- It is a wailing banshee

Unfortunately, a decent drum machine seems to come in at about $1000. When the iRoast dies, I'll likely get a drum, but am hoping there is a market breakthrough by then.....

It will get you in the game, though.

I know nothing about the subject but here's a drum roaster "Kit" for a little over $300:

Hi,

Sweet Maria's is pretty complementary about the Behmor roaster that Pete mentions. Their full review is a must read before purchasing.

eGullet also loved this machine. Link to eGullet on the Behmor 1600

I'm not sure how these machines work at high altitude.
