All,

While I'm up at my in-laws, I was thinking of trying my hand at making knives again. However, it's been a while (19 years) and I don't really think I remember the steps.

Has anyone else here on the board made knives? Do you have books you recommend?

Do your in-laws always make you think of improvised weapons?

Pete,

Hah!

No, really, my FIL has a metal shop the size of our apartment up there.

My brother has made a few knives... would you like me to hook you up? He is a helpful type.

And I thought I went overboard making things from scratch...Where do you find the right kind of steel to make knives? What kind of handle will use/make? Are these going to be large chef's knives or smaller pocket-type knives? Inquiring minds want to know! :D

Darcie,

Re: the steel, that's going to be a snag. Turns out I need to order it from Portland and it won't get here in time.

For other things, I'd like to make a paring knife and maybe a couple of slicing knives. I have some handmade knives in other sizes and wanted to complete the set. Once I get good at making them, then I can make gifts.

Handles will be various hardwoods.

Todd,

Yeah, Sheffield is a trusted name, but the folks in Portland are closer/cheaper. Also, Sheffield doesn't seem to get this whole "internet" thing. ;)

I didn't even look at the site. I called a guy here in town who makes knives and he mentioned it to me. I called to ask him where he buys his steel. Let me put it this way, this guy is passionate about his trade. He talked for about 15 minutes and I know that there are 4 different types of steel that he likes to use when he makes knives. He also gave me a lesson on the best way to sharpen knives.
