I've actually gotten quite used to the french press since we got it. I have my (early) morning routine down pretty well for those days I have to get up before many have gone to bed.

It was a good choice.

I finally gave up the grind and brew and bought the glass carafe version without the grinder. We have a cheap, crappy grinder. However, I would like to point to the validity of the poster above. We severely need a bitch and gripe session about this. Just yesterday, while making the hot chocolate(sheepishly...yes, I used a mix; Penzey's; pretty crappy, actually, even after doctoring), back to the point. The instructions read "one rounded tablespoon per cup"....in my head, I'm thinking, well Bill--define your version of a cup, a regular 8 oz, a coffee cup, or what?????

Are you suggesting that 5 oz is not a cup? :)

Paul,

Technivorm measure 5 ounces as equal to 1.2 cups.

I use an old-fashioned Farberware perc  As long as I get plenty of caffeine in the am it's all good.

Yeah, 4 oz, or thereabouts, seems to be common measure of a cup for coffee. I'll be generous and say it dates from the time of small tea cups, but realistically it is crazy. Not that I actually pay any attention to their markings (outside of for consistency) or amount/"cup". Plus it is just silly to say x coffee/cup because it isn't linear; for example, the cone size stays the same, the rate of water uptake stays the same, that is definitely going to alter the amount of coffee you need, much like making rice. On the technivorm, they have a setting which slows the outlet of water for smaller amounts which helps alleviate the problem and makes sure the grounds get well soaked; sometimes I also block the water out of the filter for a bit to soak a little if I am making only a wee bit of coffee. And then other times I just say *(*&#$# it, and make americano anyway.

100%...I was just too stubborn to listen because I had my mind set on a different direction. Thanks K&P!

Too late for the party, but I really like my Virtuoso burr grinder, although the timer/dial thingy on the side is pretty useless and I simply press the on/off button. I did the French press for a bit but had some quality control issues (which Bodum finally resolved) and opted for the Newco OCS-12 with a thermal carafe. Makes a mighty nice pot of joe.

Well...the $179.00 Keurig finally hit my price point at Belk. It was $99.00 and came with a $15.00 Belk card. How could I resist an $84 machine?

I am forever locked in to .50 K-cups of coffee.
