You're wise not to trust me. The CI one is yummy, but they could have called it an authentic cioppino and I wouldn't know the difference.

I haven't tried any other panini presses, but I LOVE my Cuisinart Griddler. I love that I can use it for panini, but also open it up and make pancakes on it.

Like ryansnurse, we have and like the Cuisinart Griddler (model GR4). Looks like the price has come down over the past couple of years.

Personally, I'm in the grill-pan-and-bacon-press camp, but then you're not shopping for me.
One thing I will recommend is stay far away from anything with "interchangeable plates" which come off the machine. In an panino press, those plates inevitably fall off when you're using them.

Fuzzy is right. Stay away from interchangeable plates. They don't always make proper contact. We had one and had to return it. First waffle was fine, took about 20 minutes to heat up again for the second. Same for the panini plates. Apparently we weren't the first or only unhappy customers because there was no argument for a return with full refund.

Dang. I have a panini press (Cuisinart) and a waffle iron (CI-recommended Black & Decker) with removeable plates. Guess I'm not in the cool kids group...
I haven't had the problen described with either. Removeable plates are arguably easier to clean.
