Post subject:  Recommendations on a new gas BBQ grill?

Hey, all:

Our old Char-Broil Professional, second-hand when I got it, has developed a gas leak and I just don't want to bother fixing it given its condition. So, time for a new grill! Any recommendations?

Here's my general search parameters:

* under $500
* propane-tank-fueled
* big enough for 8 ears of corn plus 3lbs of salmon
* stainless steel grates preferred (but I can swap these in aftermarket)
* grill that only lasts 3 years is OK if it's cheap

Recommends?

I'm still a fan of Char Broil for the price and our uses. 1st one lasted 8 years. Fits most of your parameters:

*Under $400 @ Lowes now, got ours for $285 with a coupon
*Propane-tank-fueled
*Fits 8 ears of corn on the top shelf plus 3 lbs of protein
*3 stainless steel grates

If it is important to you to be able to have one side cooler than the other, please pay attention to the direction of the flame burners. Do you need them to run front-to-back or right-to-left? My current burners runs right to left in rows that are parallel with the front/back sides of the bbq, my previous bbq had the burners running back to front - 6 burners in a row. Hence, I could create lots of heat on the left, for example. Now, I can't. I can only create heat at the front or the back. I might be belaboring the point, I hope this is clear.

This arrangement is a problem that is compounded in that the lid slopes and so the clearance changes from the front to the back - lots at the front, not so much at the back. When I could heat the left or the right, this was not an issue. For instance, when I cook pork ribs, I have them standing upright in a rib rack; it was easy to slide the whole rack to the preferred side.

I do a lot of gas cooking that is similar to cooking with briquets or wood chunks. I was very used to building a hot fire on one side (left)and a cold or cooler fire on the other. Generally, this is difficult/awkward/not smooth to do with the front to back.

Realizing that you don’t do any meat cooking this may not be an issue but it is relevant for smoking or other styles of heat control.

My three heat sources are all Weber: charcoal, smoker and gas. My warranty issues have been virtually none but when a grill started to corrode they replaced immediately - no charge.

BTW, if you can afford it, use piped in natural gas instead of propane: cheaper, easier, and more convenient.

This may seem weird, however, I have regretted not paying attention to this detail for the last 7 years… Webers don’t wear out very quickly…and they are worth nothing in the second hand market. So, do I buy a new one for this inconvenience????

Just think about what you will be cooking and where the heat is sourced for each.

Nancy,

Any particular model you recommend?

Right now we're deciding between a Weber Spirit or a Nexgrill, based on recommendation.

Wino,

Pretty much everything in the US these days is side-to-side zones for burners. They make ones that go up to 6 burners, but that's really too much as far as I'm concerned; you'd spend like 10 minutes just turning the thing on.

That's one of the reasons they make wine.......getting lit, that is :roll:

My Weber Genesis is 11 years old now and is still going strong, but I have the exact same issue as Wino. Burners run left to right meaning you can’t easily do an indirect cook or dual heat zone. I think the new ones are configured front to back though. And NG is way more convenient than propane.

Our Char Broil is a 4-Burner Stainless Steel Professional but I won't be able to get you the actual Model # until we uncover it from the winter. Hoping the weather will be kind this weekend!
