So ... our toaster is dying. We'd like to replace it with a toaster oven, just so we can reheat pastry and pizza without turning on the main oven.

However ... it really seems like nobody makes quality toaster ovens anymore. What's out there is crap -- even the Consumer Reports recommended models are crap (FWIW, I'm quite disappointed with CR, they seem to be phoning it in these days. Not renewing). It seems like all of the quality manufacturing is the "countertop ovens" which require a countertop and a 20amp circuit of their own.

Are there any regular, compact toaster ovens which aren't tinfoil firetraps? Or is that all there is?

My favorite review sources are Amazon.com and Consumersearch.com - try consumersearch first as it often incorporates Amazon.

Wino,

Unfortunately, Consumersearch is a good example of the difficulty. They only review convection toaster ovens, meaning that they don't review anything small or less than $150.

Fuzzy, I posted a while back about the Cuisinart Combo Steam/Conv. Oven. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019XOZYEA/re ... =8-2-fkmr1
Read the reviews.
If the price shocks you, remember that like many items on Amazon that can vary widely.
IMO it is well worth the cost.
Another option is the Breville Smart Oven, similar but without the steam options.
Both are excellent choices, however the CSO makes much better toast.

I have a DeLonghi that has lasted about 20 years now. (Honestly I wish it would die -- it's starting to look pretty tatty.) Their newest models have convection, but they use a standard outlet. I'm not sure how compact you need it to be. Mine (and most of the new models) have a 12x12 inch interior. The feet on mine are configured in such a way that in fits on a 7 inch deep, backless shelf on my baker's rack with no stability issues.

We use the Breville Convection Toaster Oven several times each day. It is fantastic to reheat pizza, or anything deep fried including french fries or that should remain crisp. It is worth the money imho. We use it for toast, garlic bread and reheating rolls as well. I can't think of anything I've tried that has not turned out well. They make several sizes, though love the large which will bake a pie or fit a 1/4 sheet pan for cookies.

We had a Black & Decker toaster oven that lasted for years. Replaced it with a $40 Hamilton Beach brand, maybe, not sure of the brand. Husband hated it because it couldn't toast bread, half would be burned. I bought the $250 Breville model & we love it. Yes, it toasts bread & more. Hubby does not complain about the $250 spent.

We use it for bread, bagels, eng. muffins, garlic bread. I use it as my second oven at holiday time for pie & side dishes. It is used consistently used for baked potatoes and breakfast muffins. It will hold a 13 x 9 pan but the pan must be straight sided without handles.

EN, Linda:

It's not so much about the cost, it's more about the "sheer overkill". I mean, we want to make toast, and heat up pastry, and that's about it. I'm sure the CSO is great, but I don't want to lose that much counterspace to it.

Alina:

I'll look into the Brevelles. I've had a hard time finding some place which sells them retail so that I can get a clear idea of how big the various models are.

JB:

Which DeLonghi?

Fuzzy
you should be able to see them at Bed, Bath and Beyond
or at one of the larger Kitchen Ware type stores
Maybe Sur La Table?

I bought a Breville and use it way, WAY more then expected. Ended up using the big oven quite a bit less. Even my wife manages to cook using it (banana bread). It still makes only meh toast though.
