Folks,

So I got a used commercial grill for cheap. However, it needs new grates. I'm wondering if I should just order replacements from the company (Char-Broil), which would be enameled cast iron. I think I could alternately get regular cast-iron, or stainless grates which would fit.

Thoughts?

I previously had SS; after 10 years or so of hard use, the welds started giving away, so I replaced them and ended up with enameled, which I've used a few years. I'm not sure there is a significant different between the two; if anything, I prefer the enamel so far. Cast iron will require more regular use and maintenance; however, if they are very heavy, they will give a nice sear better. Common wisdom says they will season better.

Paul,

Do I need to use special cleaning brushes on the enamel?

Wino,

Cute.

To be more specific: manufacturers ask you to use a nylon or other softer brush to clean "porcelain-enameled" grill grates. This doesn't make sense to me; if they are actually porcelain coated, then they should be harder than steel. So what's actually required?

*I* use a metal brush. I ignore whatever recommendations they gave, as a clean grate is more important. So far it has held up well; possibly the life will be shortened, but I've not ran enough years on it yet to tell.

I use Weber ceramics upon which I use their recommended brass brush.
I have used Weber SS which is frustrating because high heat seems to help it corrode and I throw them out.
The Weber Smoky Mtn. comes with SS but there the temperature rarely goes above 225F because I only use it for smoking or cold smoking.
I also had the Weber cast iron with my gas BBQ and they are just darn fine; I use a steel brush on them.
But, I use the porcelain all the time because I like the look.

The following is the latest and 'gratest' but I don't want to spring for that much $ when converted to Canuck Bucks:

Wonderful reviews on all serious bbq/smoking sites :!:

My dh left the bbq on high overnight (natural gas) and basically melted SS grates. We switched to cast iron which lasted around 12 years. Just redeemed airmiles for a new grill, no idea what it comes with.

The pizza must have been *amazing*.
